WIMA SA
WIMA started in South Australia in 1985 after an article about Linda Bootherstone promoting the Womens International Motorcycle Assoc. appeared in the Advertiser inviting women motorcycle riders to join the club. An inaugural meeting was held at Linda's home when 26 women motorcyclists signed up including Carmel Sanders now a Life Member of WIMA and who is now in her late seventies.
The SA club had it's first Rally Round The Bend at Martins Bend on the Murray River. That was when the first "Shelly Slatcher Handbag Toss was held which has become part of our WIMA Rallies and AGMs. There are still two of those original members in the SA Branch today, Carmel Sanders and Barb McEvoy.
WIMA members all have a common interest - motorcycling. Whether you are in the Adelaide metropolitan area, somewhere in the South Australian countryside or overseas, you will find you are among women who share the same goals...to become better motorcyclists and to meet new people and make new friends.
WIMA SA holds a Pink Ribbon Ride each year in October to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness. Over 400 riders take part in this ride and around $5,000 each year has been raised.
The Club holds day rides as well as weekend away rides which are very popular. You do not neeed to own a motorcycle to become a member and even though membership is restricted to women only all husbands, boyfriends, partners and family members are welcome to participate in our rides and social functions.
